SLEA - The Quiet Between Worlds

I went to an event celebrating “The Quiet Between Worlds” region an hour before singer Austin Moores’ gig. Max Kleene was singing live during the Masquerade Ball.

Max Kleene

He was dressed in a black suit and wore a mask that covered half his face. On a blue, sparkling dance floor, 40 participants were surrounded by tall arches and floating candles. Many were dressed casually, while others chose formal gowns, suits, or styles that suited them.

“The Quiet Between Worlds” was created from a growing sense of unrest and exhaustion – both online and offline – that now permeates our world: the constant performance, polarization, and pressure to define and defend identity. The region is a refuge that offers true emotional safety and comfort. It is LGBTQ+ centered on care and visibility for the most vulnerable members of the Second Life community. Here, visitors can experience moments of peace and reflection, mourn loved ones that they have lost, and support our fellow brothers and sisters,” according to Team Nabi/Butterfly Nation. Over 1,500 people have visited so far.

The team includes Nemesis Marville – engines, storytelling, and meshes; Nyx Marville – scripting and dynamic art; Dean Acer – meshes and textures; Cypher: Muse and the boss of Dean; and Rin Nemeth: artists’ coordinator and manager.

A week after the music event, I met with Neme, who lives overseas, and Nyx. They gave me a tour of numerous parts of the region and offered explanations at each highlighted space.

“Our grant started in January of 2026. We have this region through Second Life Endowment for the Arts for six months. So, the region will end and go on to a new artist at the end of June 2026,” said Neme.

The team members met in a region where the community was supportive of LGBTQ residents. When it closed, they discussed ideas on how to offer a safe space. The opportunity came, and they began their work.

They create unity and bring people together by holding weekly events. One of which is a week-long watch party in their theater, and on Sundays, a DJ mixes ambient tunes and more. They hope to offer more events, especially for Pride coming up, now that the building phase is nearly complete.

As for the tour, Neme and Nyx showed me the upper levels. I explored the beach area myself. Not far from the landing point is a guitar stage with rainbows and stars streaming from the sand. Bean bag chairs surround the area.

A memorial park features a marble headstone and a touching message, a harp that plays after you click it. Sit on the Pride bench and listen.

Step into the wooden cabin and watch a special video.

Watch the interactive video in the wooden cabin. Relax by the fire pit or in the cuddle heart.

Neme’s tour led to the exploration of the upper part of the build. He told me to walk slowly towards the first teleport, which should bring us up.

“This marks the end of the world as we know it,” said Neme. “This is why in the book up there it says choose wonder over fear.” We went over the bridge instead. “This is a spot for gatherings, for friends and family, and for concerts and events. This is the Ballroom biome. It’s the face we show to the people around us. It’s what we want them to perceive us as,” he told me.

I recognize it as the room where Max performed. Neme tells me that every arc in the room has a message, and together they become whole.

The Little Prince build.

We took the portal to the next area. He said this was the Little Prince biome, which features elements from the book.

“You can either be the Little Prince or the Narrator, as they are the only characters missing,” he said, and asked if I knew the story.

Netera with Neme.

“It should feel like they were just here, and their absence should be notable. I think the first thing people do is think of a loved one who is now among the stars. People react with feelings of nostalgia, some even grief. Although it’s more introspective in a way. It’s the feeling of lost potential, of what life could have been if they were still around."

Another wooden cabin for sitting and reflecting.

We then move on to the cabin. Neme said that this is a place to calm down from the feelings we experienced in the previous setting. Most of the scene has interactive areas to hang out, contemplate, or just share a moment with someone you’re close to.

He added that there is an important over-arching theme that extended across all the builds in the region and that was the opportunity to contemplate your life as well as options for making memories.

“Which is so important in a space like SL where folks are looking for connections,” Neme said. “Around this ark/biome, this is a place where you can withdraw and relax and leave whenever you feel ready to. A place to be yourself without having to meet any expectations.”

“There needs to be safe places to come,” I told him.

“Exactly,” said Nyx. “Whether it is someone decompressing from real life, or looking for a way to reach out to a community, that is what SL is at its heart. A place to be more than you can imagine and to find your chosen people.”

Nyx stated, as Neme did, that their region will be open to the end of June, and then another team will create an installation, or whatever their passion is, and it will be bittersweet.

“We do not have an option yet to move elsewhere, but we are open to any opportunities folks may have. We put in a very concentrated effort to do everything ourselves. So, approximately 98% of what you are seeing is something our team members made or created together,” Nyx added.

A tree-house build focusing on grief, how it is love with nowhere to go. Play your song anyway.

Onward we went. This time, we were transported to a floating treehouse, which Neme said was a standard blender ruins made with mesh.

Not all wishes are meant to come true...some are meant to change you.

“Neme has created much of the mesh you see around each scene. Each scene is encapsulated within its own biome. Right now, we are about 2,500m over the beach below,” explained Nyx. “I think we have space for everyone to claim a spot as their own at this point.”

Neme tells me I’ll love the next area. He points across the bridge to a piano, the next portal, he said. There are messages.

“He has made pieces, since we started, that tell stories, follow a narrative, and make people connect. This piece made me teary-eyed,” Nyx admitted.

Nyx and Neme.

We are at a gazebo where the stars sparkle above. Neme said that there are four messages and poses, perfect for couples. Perfect to ask your loved one to marry you, and there’s even a wedding venue downstairs.

“If you wish to book space for a wedding, it’s free. If you want to flex your DJ skills on any given night – free. If someone wants to hold a morning yoga class, the only hurdle is your imagination and wanting to see it thrive,” said Neme.

You are not alone.

“I think the little messages are cute and endearing,” added Nyx.  “Sometimes it’s hard to find the words to say how one feels.”

You are more than what hurts you.

Neme explained that they tried to alternate heavy places with places to rest your mind and soul so it wouldn’t be overbearing.

Your journey just begins - we are walking it with you...

“I think the vastness of massive objects like space, reminds us of how small we are and how small our troubles can be in the grand scheme,” said Nyx.

SLEA3 - A Dark Star

 By Bixyl Shuftan

At the Second Life Endowment for the Arts regions, there's an exhibit named "A Dark Star." It was designed by Gem Preiz, and is listed in the Destinations Guide.

A DARK STAR by Gem Preiz will be the third of 3 installations exhibited on SLEA 3 full region grant during the first half of 2023. It synthesizes the colors of "LINES OF LIGHTS" and the shape of the structures of "COLOR & GLOW", both still on display on the same Sim (see landmarks below). After an enclosed maze of lines and lights, and glowing colors open to sky and horizons, A DARK STAR concludes the series with a construction in 3 dimensions, surrounded by orbiters, and nested in an isotropic 3D universe of glowing lines, the boundaries of which are unreachable.

I, along with Charlee, headed to the listed location at SLEA3 (80/66/319). And the place was quite stunning, a little like stepping into a "Tron" scene. It was dark with neon-like lines of colored light, with small pyramid-shapes on the ground and larger crystals. Hearing some sound, I looked around, and there was some cluster of objects made up partially of white, blue, and purplish light and partially of black spheres, the latter which were moving in and out of the cluster. There was also a "throne" of amber crystal and shapes. We also found a spaceship, and were able to fly around see most of the place from above.

It wasn't long before I got contacted by someone, the artist of the exhibit, Gem Preiz. He told me this wasn't the only place in the sim, but the latest one of three, the two others being "Color and Glow" and "Lines of Light." "If you see the two first ones, you will see that this third one, the dark Star is a bit the synthesis of the others," he described.

"I have been exhibiting fractals in SL for years, then started to build environment to display them, and then the builds became predominant, and nowadays I show mostly constructions if this kind, using much reflections, lights and highlighting of this kind. (It is) purely conceptual, not aiming at meaning anything special, else than pleasure for the eyes. And I like minerals, crystals, and geometries. I like repetitive patterns and try to create some nice ones to look at. ... as recommendation, advanced lighting model , shared environment, and long drawing distance to see everything as I created it.

"I like to build sim wide environments, almost always going off sim as much as I can,  to maximize (for me at least) the immersion I like to be overwhelmed by the environment.

When I asked what he had made before, Gem answered, "... in summary, many fractals exhibition, several LEA grants in the past, and sim wide builds : skyscrapers, a short model of a modern city, arcadia, a neoclassical city, a space station, a space base on exoplanet. You can see some pictures of everything in my flickr if you are interested:  https://www.flickr.com/photos/187894176@N07/albums ."

Charlee and I would visit the other two places. "Color and Glow" was just as impressive and striking in its own right. The landscape and some objects would change color every several minutes. Over time, we would see it go from red, to green, to orange and yellow, to blue. So would a "couch" that we saw. There were also large dark spheres that would roll down inclines at some places.

After some time, we checked out "Lines of Light" next. While interesting, it wasn't quite as good as the other two places, lacking the up and down movement of the other two. Sill, it was worth a look with it's lit blue and reddish passageways.

SLEA Bridge Project And Steve Who

By Gemma Cleanslate

The Creative Arts in Second Life are so extensive. There are so many venues for performances, galleries, museums, it is almost impossible to get to all or even know they exist. SLEA Bridge Project does so much for all of us to at least have a clue. I used to use the Gallery Hud to get to some of them at times over the years. But Now,

“The Bridge Project Phase 1 Completed!

We, those of us involved in The SLEA Bridge Project, aspire to shorten that distance between YOU and an immersive arts experience in SL. As a bridge between the SLEA and the multitude of painters, sculptors, musicians, writers, performers, photographers, television and radio presenters, conceptual artists and so many more.  Come view and learn more about our vast SL Art Community across the grid.  https://slendowmentforthearts.wordpress “ came from Tansee a couple weeks ago.  So I went to take a look.

It is amazing. Click any board on the bridge and the information and location are all there... so many people , so many locations. And the bridge itself is a work of art. Go take a look for yourself. If you love the arts join the group so you can get notices for  marvelous shows and projects going on all the time. Join at the Hub.

SLEA has so much going on all the time one could be occupied there 24/7 if one had time. I made time to get over to the Street Cafe for a live performance the other day and it was a marvelous experience.

Steve Who (Steve Yiwama) brought his Saxaphone to entertain. When I arrived there were about 6 avatars in attendance while many watched on Youtube where you could see him playing live . By the time I left there were at least 30 listening to his sweet sounds. Steve is Steve Nelson, a professional musician or over 30 years in real-life.

This was his second appearance at the PopUP street artists cafe . Of himself he says, “....shouldn't really say this as I genuinely HATE self promotion.....but was the founding member of a well known signed rock band, and many tours and tv/radio appearances.....I never wanted to become an OLD rock guitarist so decided many years ago to learn saxophone-have played in many big bands and for some famous people too....oh shutup Seve!.....when are you going to grow up.“

It is not hard to see why his work is so popular . You can check him out at https://www.facebook.com/totalpaininthebuttcreative/ or look at his profile for other ways to hear his music.

Entrance to SLEA  Hub where you can pick up a hud , accept the experience or use a teleport to the regions or venues.  http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/SLEA7/30/35/56

SLEA Alternative Worlds

By Gemma Cleanslate

My friend Slatan Dryke of Virtual Ability often runs mystery tours on Fridays and I try to attend once in a while to see what region or activity he is highlighting, I managed to make it last Friday and was so glad I did, As you know the new SLEA opened January 1, 2021 and had its grand opening Saturday, January 22 and 23. He chose to take all the attendees over to Region 3. Once we arrived he turned us loose to explore on our own.

What a charming experience. Melodie Melodie Heart - Riegler (MarieMadeleine3) and Barry Richez (Dreams) have created an Alternative World.

Their inspiration ,  “We intend to raise awareness of climate justice and sustainability through art. Preserve our planet, recycle, control pollution, rethink what is taken for granted. Seek a compromise between eco-logic and eco-nomics.We intend to preserve our planet, recycle, control pollution, rethink what is taken for granted. We seek a compromise between eco-logic and eco-nomics.” To express this the entire installation is full of origami and other paper cutting art pieces.  The interactive sites are fun and playful but full of meaning on saving the planet. I found the sky lovely and soothing while taking a ride in the balloons in the air. The pipe organ is fun to play and sends music notes across the sky.

There is a set of washing machines set up to cleanse the planet, each one a different piece  of the planet from nature to emotions and ideals ending with one asking “ what would you wash?”

At one point I got caught by a magnet in a shopping cart and was drawn in . It took me ages to get away until iskye suggested I stand,  (laughter). That did it and I escaped.

Everyone in the group had fun with the interactive pieces. Lady Claire was fascinated with a cute bridge to an  animal island that kept forming and collapsing with a touch. We all enjoyed the visit and had  memories to think about as we left.

Melodie came along at that moment and we all told her how much we enjoyed the experience. There is much more to see in Region 3.

Enter into the center landing area and pick up the hud or  enter the portal and accept the experience  to guide you to some of the regions already finished  and I peeked at a few that  under construction that look so interesting and am going back for more. I recommend checking out the ground level which contains so many interesting spots to check out .
