Still More SLB Exhibits

 By Bixyl Shuftan

The Second Life Twentieth Birthday has now ended. The Lindens gave it a few more days, but nothing lasts forever. But yours truly went around to take a few pictures.

One exhibit that got my attention was Caledon's, which gave you a quest to help out it's Catgirl Brigade.

You would go to various characters, sometimes getting gear along the way.

Your objective was to get a piece of crystal for the Brigade, after which you (and they) could go home.

I got some diving gear and a souvenir jacket out of it.

Another that got my attention was Drama Liebre's "Doodletown" cartoonish exhibit.

This camera exhibit for photography in Second Life, "Focus on Photography," I recognized from a previous SLB.

"Racing Through Time"

A list of names, possibly drivers.

"A Java Island Journey"

There was a similar exhibit just across the road.

"Outpost 3020"

There was quite a lot to see. We may post some more pictures later. It was a great SL20B.

Serenity's "The Fantastic Future of Health"

By Bixyl Shuftan

At SLB Fabulous (213, 221, 23), there's an exhibit "The Fantastic Future of Health," by Serenity (SerenKitty). It's also called "My Adventuredom's Hedge Maze."

The first part of the exhibit was what Serenity felt were the greater problems with the current US health care system, notably working-class people sometimes having trouble getting adequate treatment for illnesses and conditions due to a system "that focuses on sick people equaling profit."

"The current model causes the sick to go without care and medicine unless they can afford it."

There, I ran into Serenity, and Kamden (KamdenFoxHyde) who Serenity introduced as her real-life son. Serenity told me the exhibit, "nutshells our two LLCs. I head one and Kam the other."

Serenity showed me the other parts of the exhibit, "This area highlights the wellness center that we're working to build."

"The purpose of our businesses is to fund no-cost wellness and urgent care centers across the US and Canada. We opened our My Adventuredom LLC in 2020, and Kam opened his this year.

Part of the exhibit was for "animal-assisted therapy to help with physical and psychological needs." Serenity would tell me, "Kam works with horses. He volunteers and trains at a stable near our house. He's working toward training therapy horses and dogs."

We then got to the next part of the exhibit, "This area represents how we do it. Some of these businesses are currently running and some we're working to build. We offer both physical and virtual products through our various companies, all under the My Adventuredom LLC umbrella. Kam's LLC has his own brands and lines. Typically horse focused."

We went up an elevator to the treehouse part of the exhibit.

Inside were a few gifts, and a couple graphs about My Adventuredom and Sen Michaelson LLC, "These graphics display how it all works. So now you know what I do in RL, besides school. This is why Kam and I are working towards our medical doctorates so that we can work in our own clinics."

Serenity mentioned her real-life trouble on her profile's First Life page, "You also know about my autoimmune disease. That is why my focus is diagnostics and rare diseases.

"Kam is my primary caregiver. He's my right-hand man in business, school, and my health. Well, my husband helps us too. I've been with him for 25 years, so can't leave him out (laughter)."

When I asked about her time in Virtual Ability, Serenity answered, "Oh, goodness. I can't remember how long I've been there. I believe it was 2012-2016 but then I left for a few years after a friend passes away. Kam moved the class I was teaching over to Whole Brain Health and added Spanish to the Nutrition classes he intends to teach. I'm only holding Building Hour on Wednesdays at VAI at the moment.  I also volunteer with Virtual Worlds Education Consortium. I'm on the comm team, events team, and networking team."

Our conversation soon drifted to other subjects, and Serenity soon had to take care of other matters. Her exhibit at the Second Life Birthday will be around until the sims close to the public on Tuesday July 11.

Some SL20B Exhibits

 By Bixyl Shuftan

The Second Life Twentieth Birthday, or SL20B, has come to our virtual world, a chance for both Linden Lab and the residents to celebrate our virtual world's anniversary.  Each of the Second Life Birthday events have been special in their own right. This year, two details make it stand out. This is the first SL Birthday event in which there have been adult rated regions, for both exhibits and the Shop and Hop. It's also been the first one that some exhibits from previous anniversary events have returned.

The Newser had one of it's own, at SLB Fantasy (104/34/24). Built by the talented Silvia Ametza (and assistants), it was about a possible future astronaut base on Jupiter's moon of Europa.

There was information about the moon, which is strongly believed to have liquid water underneath the icy surface, and possibly life.

The section of base on the surface looked small. But there was an elevator to go down.

Underneath the ice was the rest of the base, as well as what the larger life forms could be.

We have learned much in our lifetimes about the heavens. But this learning goes back over countless generations to when cavemen looked at the sky and wondered what was out there.

Nearby was the exhibit of "The League of Extraordinary Roleplayers," along with two notable stories by HG Wells represented in an unusual combination.

DeniseUnicorn Toonie's "Econocorn Living" exhibit in SLB Beguile.

Bay City's exhibit, also in SLB Beguile.

"The Fantastic Future of Health," by Serenity (SerenKitty) at SLB Fabulous.

Drama Liebre's "Doodletown" cartoonish exhibit, also in SLB Fabulous.

One of the pod cars to sit in and get around without walking.

That's all for now, but more locations soon.

SLEA3 - A Dark Star

 By Bixyl Shuftan

At the Second Life Endowment for the Arts regions, there's an exhibit named "A Dark Star." It was designed by Gem Preiz, and is listed in the Destinations Guide.

A DARK STAR by Gem Preiz will be the third of 3 installations exhibited on SLEA 3 full region grant during the first half of 2023. It synthesizes the colors of "LINES OF LIGHTS" and the shape of the structures of "COLOR & GLOW", both still on display on the same Sim (see landmarks below). After an enclosed maze of lines and lights, and glowing colors open to sky and horizons, A DARK STAR concludes the series with a construction in 3 dimensions, surrounded by orbiters, and nested in an isotropic 3D universe of glowing lines, the boundaries of which are unreachable.

I, along with Charlee, headed to the listed location at SLEA3 (80/66/319). And the place was quite stunning, a little like stepping into a "Tron" scene. It was dark with neon-like lines of colored light, with small pyramid-shapes on the ground and larger crystals. Hearing some sound, I looked around, and there was some cluster of objects made up partially of white, blue, and purplish light and partially of black spheres, the latter which were moving in and out of the cluster. There was also a "throne" of amber crystal and shapes. We also found a spaceship, and were able to fly around see most of the place from above.

It wasn't long before I got contacted by someone, the artist of the exhibit, Gem Preiz. He told me this wasn't the only place in the sim, but the latest one of three, the two others being "Color and Glow" and "Lines of Light." "If you see the two first ones, you will see that this third one, the dark Star is a bit the synthesis of the others," he described.

"I have been exhibiting fractals in SL for years, then started to build environment to display them, and then the builds became predominant, and nowadays I show mostly constructions if this kind, using much reflections, lights and highlighting of this kind. (It is) purely conceptual, not aiming at meaning anything special, else than pleasure for the eyes. And I like minerals, crystals, and geometries. I like repetitive patterns and try to create some nice ones to look at. ... as recommendation, advanced lighting model , shared environment, and long drawing distance to see everything as I created it.

"I like to build sim wide environments, almost always going off sim as much as I can,  to maximize (for me at least) the immersion I like to be overwhelmed by the environment.

When I asked what he had made before, Gem answered, "... in summary, many fractals exhibition, several LEA grants in the past, and sim wide builds : skyscrapers, a short model of a modern city, arcadia, a neoclassical city, a space station, a space base on exoplanet. You can see some pictures of everything in my flickr if you are interested:  https://www.flickr.com/photos/187894176@N07/albums ."

Charlee and I would visit the other two places. "Color and Glow" was just as impressive and striking in its own right. The landscape and some objects would change color every several minutes. Over time, we would see it go from red, to green, to orange and yellow, to blue. So would a "couch" that we saw. There were also large dark spheres that would roll down inclines at some places.

After some time, we checked out "Lines of Light" next. While interesting, it wasn't quite as good as the other two places, lacking the up and down movement of the other two. Sill, it was worth a look with it's lit blue and reddish passageways.

Bellisseria's Fourth Anniversary

By Gemma Cleanslate

What a marvelous busy weekend I had along with so many others! At 10:00 am Saturday Patch Linden opened the Bellisseria 4th Anniversary celebration with a short to the point speech thanking everyone who has been involved over the preparation and building of the new continent. He said also it was the residents who made it a community. He also promised more big things in the planning and to come. One thing he did mention specifically was Welcome Hubs for new residents of the continent which sounds great. There were 85 residents and visitors at Patch’s speech . Strawberry Linden and Chronos Mole were present also.

Pruudence Anton , who was the main collaborator said, “Thank you today to Patch Linden for opening the celebration and our 3 Amazing DJs, & all our Wonderful Guests!

"Dj Gio, who you can find 2 days a week at Bellis Blues Cafe. - TY!
"DJ Hammie, find her with BEE and at Zoo-Palooza this month. - TY!
"DJ Stephanie, find her at BEE events and Bellis Blues Cafe. - TY!
"Thank you to the Hostesses, Brooke, Vari and Kizzie.

"And a special thank you to Kalia and Riot Hax for their help with this event and build.”

The party went on all day with visitors coming and going.

For those who do not know the whole history of the continent I asked Teresa Firelight who wrote a marvelous article for The Gazette, Journal of record of the Bellisserian Bureau of Bureaucracy and the Continental Passport Control Board in Second Life® if I could include her article here.

"I caught up with Bellisseria's head builder Abnor Mole, and he had this to say;

'When we started building Bellisseria, we figured it was going to be a few hundred regions and we thought that was HUGE. We wanted to incorporate what we always loved about mainland --its ‘connectedness.’ This is a feeling of continual space that you can't get on just a few regions. It is the perception of community that Second Life started out with, a feeling that many of us remember from so long ago. If fact, that feeling of community is what made us fall in love with this platform in the first place.

People responded to that idea. Four years later it has ballooned to a few THOUSAND regions. When we moles step back and look at what we've built over those years, it gives us a reverent pause. We think, ‘Wow, we started building some homes and some land, and we ended up building a CONTINENT, and it is full of people!’ It cannot not make one smile.

So let me give you a quick history about Bellisseria and how it was built. Bellisseria was born on April 15, 2019 with an initial release of 136 regions. This included two house styles: Traditional and Houseboats. The user community’s response surprised and overwhelmed Linden Lab (LL). Every single house sold out in less than 48 hours. There were many additional requests for homes that LL could not fill because there were no more left. The moles were kept very busy building more homes as soon as possible. On May 15, 2019, LL released another 709 houseboats, which were again snatched up quickly.

By June 24, 2019, Linden Lab was ready to release more Traditional homes, and elected to go with a new strategy. They released one region at a time, rather than all at once. The attempt was to release a new region every day or two, except for obvious gaps on the weekends. The homes remained very popular and tended to “sell out” just about as fast as they were released.

On Sept 17, 2019 the 512 m2 campers were released. Roughly three months later, the Victorians were released (on Dec 16, 2019). Demand still exceeded supply and Linden Lab and the moles kept working hard to make more homes available. They released an additional 2,330 new homes (spanning all 4 house styles) on December 18, 2019.

In short, they released over 10,000 Linden homes in 2019, and there was still demand for more! On April 1, 2020, less than a year after the initial release, Linden Lab made Log Homes available – 4,828 of them. The good news is that by this time, there were usually some Linden Homes available for those who wanted them. They might not be able to get the theme they wanted, but there was usually something available. There would be occasional times where all homes on the Land Page were sold out, but if a person tried back a little later, they could find a Linden Home.

Linden Lab hoped to release the Stilt Homes shortly after that, but the 'uplift' project caused a long delay. This was a project where LL moved their code from their own (somewhat aged) computers to the AWS Cloud. That was a complex project that preempted most others. People kept asking Patch when the Stilts would be available. In response, he ended up Trade Marking the term Soon™
Roughly eight months went by. On December 21, 2020, the Stilts were finally released. The initial release was 3900 Stilt homes, plus another 552 House Boats. There were a few bumps in the road with this release, but were sorted out before year end.

About four months later, the Chalets were released, along with a massive community center – Die Betrunkene Maus – located in Muehlenbach. This happened on March 30, 2021. Four and a half months after that, on August 12, 2021, the Fantasy homes were released. The fantasy regions introduced new technology. They had trees and plants that glowed at night, and the foliage colours changed as the seasons passed. Next came the Newbrooke container homes on March 3, 2022, followed by scenic Sakura (Japanese) homes on May 16, 2022.

In November 2022, they released an update to the Traditional homes and a new Traditional community center on Chippewa Junction. Then in December, 4 new houseboat styles were released.

Of course, Bellisseria is much more than just the houses that people live in. Several community groups sprang up, such as Bellisseria Citizens, Bellisseria Entertainers and Events, etc. These have really fostered community and organised many parties. There have also been volunteer groups who work to create fun activities such as The BBB (Bellisseria Bureau of Bureaucracy) who issue passports, passport stamp machines, licences, etc. Other service groups included the Parade of Homes to showcase nicely-decorated homes owners open to the public, Belli Bin to playfully collect our trash, in-home clubs open to the public such as the Bellis Blues Cafe, etc. And there have been publications to keep people informed of what is going on, such as The Gazette. There are so many others that I did not list who contribute to making Bellisseria a great place to live. It is not just the place; it is the community.

Happy Birthday Bellisseria!”

Many thanks to Teresa for saving me hours of work! I know she put in many to get this all together and The Gazette~

Sunday after I had recovered a bit I spent the morning traveling all over the grid on The Nature Collective hunt which goes on until the end of the month. Many of the members of the Collective had lovely gifts hidden at their nature regions.

If you have an affinty with nature and want to see the lovely builds visit the Nature Collective and get their Hud that will help you visit the sites of all the members. Some are massive some quaint and small by the side of a road. Each has its own charm and they are all well worth visiting. There is also a photo contest involved. Check that out too!
