All Hallows at Moochie

By Gemma Cleanslate

“The veil grows thin and [All Hallows is ready to welcome you into its ghoulish embrace. May your month be filled with flickering lanterns, crisp leaves, and a touch of haunted magic. Happy October, everyone! “ Yay! One of my very favorite places to roam among the brilliant foliage and discover all the attractive hidden places for sitting and talking or for taking photos. Bring you honey or your family and wander in the forest. This is not the scariest Halloween places I will visit but one of the most enjoyable.

At the entrance pick up a map to carry with you and postcards to send to your friends . Couples will find a rezzer for walking together. Turn on the shared environment and be sure to turn on your music for eerie sounds, stories, and music to accompany you on your travels. I had to brighten the environment for photos . If you check the railway car you will see a map of the whole region with indicators of scenes you don’t want to miss. There are those who rent certain areas to celebrate the entire month. You will be warned if you wander onto those properties so you can just turn around and leave. They are mostly along the west side of the region.

From the large circle surrounded by hay bales and pumpkins and hundreds of candles and other expressions of Halloween there are paths that go in all directions making it easy to find your way to all sites. Find a dance ball(candles) above the center décor and enjoy. Before you take a path check out the “snow angel”, and the gallows. Or become part of the décor in the hearse. Walking along the paths little scenes to sit or touch will give you a chance for a great photo. I think a whole family will enjoy the areas with carousel, monkey bars , other toys to play with.

Along the water of the small harbor goulish servers, Cressida Wretched and Henrietta Hagwort and offer drinks and Halloween food to try. Henrietta has a terrible story , check her profile..sad. I did eat and survived so go ahead. Out on the water there is a cute game, Trick or Treat Trail Game. I did not try it but think I will when I return with friends. Take a swan boat ride. On the other side of the harbor is a charming restaurant to try also.

I did not stay on the paths but wandered into the woods to enjoy autumn colors At one point I did find the little outdoor theater showing an old black and white movie fit for the season. I have visited about four times so far and still have not found all there is to be found so shall plan on coming back during the month that it will be there I did not get to the church yet!

More Halloween Shopping: Khargo and Halloween Town in Portland

By Gemma Cleanslate

Khargo is another terrific place not only to shop but to enjoy the fun scenes for Halloween.

The various skeleton scenes are cute rather than scary but that is part of Halloween too, being amusing. Skeletons rule performing all kinds of spooky activities . It seems they like the water in this region and have boats that would look good if you have a waterfront property anywhere. Listen for sounds and use the shared environment for the best experience.

They also have a beach filled with skeletons sunbathing, serving drinks and having a great time. If you have a beach to decorate check here. Elsewhere I saw a burnt out house filled with skeletons that evidently make it out that would be a decoration for a dark region or parcel.

At this “shop” not only can you do your shopping but you can do it by taking a ride and buying as you go along. Take a tour of Halloween town at Portland , Maine. There are many little scenes for sale.

There are three tours to chose that are really fun to ride and see wonderful views ... not all of  the tours show items that are for sale, just a great Halloween experience. It is getting closer and there will be so many experience tours and rides to just sit back and enjoy in a scary way. I will be visiting some and let you know.

Since I recommended checking out several full perm shops for Halloween items you might like to go over to see what they are offering at the Full Perm event til November 15. There are advertised “40 full perm stores in one place. Full perm mesh, animations, sounds, textures, builders kits, mesh templates, creator kits. B2B event, market, fair. *by entering this land you will automatically be added to our subscribers list* / Halloween party mesh” I checked it out and you should too.

Early Halloween Shopping

By Gemma Cleanslate

Halloween looms. In one chat I heard the other day someone said they saw a store full and posted a slurl. Another remarked ,”I had better check my Christmas decorations” Well, it is not around the corner but Halloween shopping has opened at various popular stores so it is time to start looking. I flew over to one of my favorite Halloween shops I knew would be open to look . There is so much! Dench is a shop where I always find cute décor for any holiday.

The Halloween shop is massive as usual. Before you enter the building itself check the outside lawns filled with outdoor décor for your parcels. Inside find skellies , wanderers, wearable spooky dancers that you can try out by sitting on them, and so much more. Check out the ghouls and goblins and lots of pumpkins. Some moan, or groan and add to the spookiness. How about getting a full avatar for the holiday. There are always gifts for group members and so many bargains! There is a whole wall full of 5L decorations. Large and small . Do not miss it!!

I have a friend who always gives me a rezzday or Christmas gift that she created from a collection of fun things. I finally asked her where she gets the pieces she puts together so well with animation and sound sometimes. She pointed me to full perm places to look at the offerings. I went over to two just to see what was available. The places are amazing ! The walls of both full perm sites were full of items that could be used to build a display of your liking. Some of the stores have vendors on the wall that are collected for the holiday or type. Others are spread around all the walls. So searching for Halloween or autumn related items takes a while. Caming is necessary. I did see a couple of shoppers flying to be closer to choose what they wanted. Regular builders probably are used to this and have no problem. That is not me . Go take a look though if you love to combine items or pass them along to others .

Also, there is the Sweetlips store which had great pumpkins!!

I love the name of this place, Meshed Potato.

There are many more autumn and Halloween sales to check out and I will be back with a few more.

Wind Phones in Second Life

By Klaus Bereznyak

When words left unsaid weigh heavily and the person we need to say them to is no longer with us, what solace can there be? In 2010, a Japanese garden designer Itaru Sasaki set up an old telephone booth in his garden in Ōtsuchi to continue “talking” to his cousin who had passed away. Knowing the line was not connected, he imagined his words carried instead on the wind. Since then, the idea of a kaze no denwa (a wind phone) has caught on and spread all over the world ... and even into the virtual spaces beyond our everyday 'first life'.

Thanks to a group of residents in Second Life, the wind phone phenomenon has taken root in the virtual world too. The Wind Phone Collective was formed to extend these spaces to others, offering places of solace where an avatar can let their voice travel in the wind to a lost loved one.

I spoke with Zoe Foodiboo, one of the founders of the collective, about how the idea came to her:

“I learned of wind phones in 2022, through a novel that a fellow book lover, Veyot, shared at a book club event. The novel is called The Phone Booth at the Edge of the World by Laura Imai Messina. One of my special interests in Second Life is curating meaningful experiences inspired by literature. So naturally, after reading about wind phones, I was inspired to host one at The Reading Room, my book-themed gathering space. Two years later, I added a second wind phone in Seogyeoshire.”

The presence of these installations has had a quiet ripple effect. “Having a wind phone has brought new friendships and kind words. People often share their experiences in my guest book or directly with me. Having lost SL friends myself, I also appreciate having a place of solace so close to home, where I can reconnect and remember them.”

In time, Zoe connected with another resident, Emm Evergarden, who had also created a phone booth sanctuary. This sparked the idea of networking such places together. “Thus the Wind Collective was born,” Zoe explains, “with the aim to help others create their own version of the wind phone and to share these spaces of solace with a broader community.”

So far, a handful of wind phones have been created across the grid, each with its particular atmosphere and setting. The most recent notecard of landmarks, available from any one of the windphone locations, lists five currently in service. So far, a handful of wind phones have been created across the grid, each with its own atmosphere and setting.

I started with Zoe’s original installation, the Reading Room Wind Phone. It lies along a winding path in Seogyeoshire (http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Gundeulbawe/42/166/45). The path is bordered by wildflowers and shrubs, leading past cottages and gardens to a secluded spot where the booth waits. It feels nicely integrated with Zoe’s Reading Room, which is right next door, and, on lingering for a while, the poetry begins to seep in from the surroundings.

Then, staying in Seogyeoshire, which takes up an expanse of leafy acres on the Northwestern side of the mainland continent of Jeogeot, it's not far to the Seogyeoshire Wind Phone (http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Seogyeo/210/246/39). Also placed by Zoe, this one is a classic, red phone booth typical of British yesteryears. If you use this phone, your whisperings will be accompanied by bleating sheep. It's also close to the railway station, and it seems appropriate that this is located in a spot that invokes the memories of comings and goings: as if those missed have simply caught an earlier train. It is also appropriately just next door to the local war memorial, which offers a quiet place to sit in remembrance.

Seogyeoshire is a collective mainland community of homes, villages and landscaped spaces inspired by RL rural Wales.

In the nearby region of Somdari on Jeogeot, Petronella Piers hosts the Somdari Wind Phone in a secluded garden (http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Somdari/124/250/43). This wind phone feels like a well-kept secret. It sits on the edge of broad lawns, with well-maintained floral borders and trees. The sound of a waterfall mingles with birdsong in the background and it feels truly timeless. So, there are three wind phones, relatively close to each other, but each with a slightly different atmosphere. The remaining two are further afield.

The Cerulean Sea Wind Phone, created by Emm Evergarden, the other instigator and founding member of the Wind Phone Collective, is situated in the Cerulean Township (http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Cerulean%20Sea/28/133/24). This overgrown booth, with its door hanging off, is located alongside the remnants of an abandoned railway in a setting of delightful decay. The area provides a gateway to the wider township, which is an easy place to get lost in nostalgia and forget about the passing of time. As with all the phones, there is a way provided to write a message to a departed one or read those others have left, so the memories exercised (or even exorcised!) have a communal as well as a personal aspect.

Finally, I visited The Respite for Reflection Wind Phone, which can be found on the Gaeta V mainland in Huscovan (http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Huscovan/78/80/33). It stands at the edge of a cool green forest, attended by butterflies and fairy lights. The location is close to the ocean, which infuses it with cool mist and a shifting, mysterious light. The setting has a liminal quality and feels more like a threshold between two worlds.

Choosing a favourite is completely impossible, but it's nice to think that one could choose from a few different settings the one most appropriate to the person you want to talk to on the wind. They are clearly valued and in use, judging by hearsay and the guest books. And there's room for more. Zoe has simple advice for anyone wishing to make their own: “There’s no ‘right’ way to set up a wind phone. Choose a phone that appeals to you. Set it up in a peaceful setting—perhaps with a place to sit. Let people know about it. Looking at images of wind phones around the world is a fruitful way to get ideas.”

The Wind Phone Collective compiles and distributes an updated list of wind phones in SL and welcomes new contributions. Nobody seems to have done an urban, grungy one yet. It would be wonderful to see some more Wind Phones in Second Life.

R&N Photography And Art Gallery

 By Bixyl Shuftan

About a week ago, I attended the opening day party of an art and photo gallery exhibit. It was held by the staff of Club Lion for "R&N Photography / Art Gallery."

Nita (Huanita Wunderlich)  sent the invitation, "You're Invited to Party with us on Thursday 10th July.  - Start ⏰ 12 pm slt. We have some amazing photos to share with you. A collection of photos from both of us, from years of photography. Ricardo & Me open our New Photography and Art Gallery, also we Celebrate my RL Birthday. Looking forward to see you! ㋡ - I would be very Happy if you could make it ㋡ "

I dropped by when Ricardo Avalira was performing on stage at 1PM.

 There were some gifts available.

Including a rideable pickle.

The exhibits were in two different rooms. One had the following sign, "All the photos in this gallery are my RL work. I have placed my work into these amazing frames, which will resize via a menu from small enough to place on your coffee table to large enough to cover the entire wall of your house. For this reason I have priced them all the same, even though they are displayed at different sizes."

There were various examples of art. One could get a copy if desired, but that would cost about 100L.

One wing had some mannequins (art?) and a few examples of sculpture.

This included a colorful lion head which one guy made into a mask..

You can get to the exhibit at: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/The%20Lions/47/32/3335

Free SLB Shop and Hop Car

 By Bixyl Shuftan

As of the writing of this article, there's still several days left in the SL22B "Shop and Hop" shopping event. Each of the stores has freebies, or a gift certificate. For the Olympus Motors store at Zinnia (227/102/23), they have something just about all of us in real life could use: a free car.

The car boasts 64 colors of paint jobs, a realistic looking engine, realistic sounds, an alarm, and more.

To get it, click on the vendor and select "buy." You then get the giver. You select "add" on that, click the giver HUD, and you get the car in your inventory.

The interior is well detailed.

Remember to turn off any AO of yours when you take the wheel.

I took it out for a short spin. It seemed to handle sim borders okay. But it could have a little trouble rounding corners. So be careful on bridges over water.

Once again, the free car is at http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Zinnia/227/102/23
